Between 25 and 80% of all post-harvest fresh fruits and vegetables are thrown away(depending on variety) and the culprit is the key role ethylene plays in controlling the ripening of fresh produce.  To reduce this waste demands a detailed knowledge of the rates that ethylene can flow into or out of and through the product's packaging.

The solution to this problem is Versaperm's vapour permeability measurement system which can determine this to a Parts Per Million (PPM) accuracy over a wide range of environmental conditions and temperatures (Versaperm equipment can, optionally, measure temperatures from –40 to 1000°C).  The instruments have been designed to be fast and simple to use as they have an automated computerised control.

As well as measuring ethylene permeability, the multi-use equipment can optimally measure the permeability of all other gases relevant to shelf-life and quality – including water vapour, oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and hydrocarbons.

The Versaperm system works not just for samples of the packaging and coating materials by themselves, but it also works with complete packages and wax coatings.  It can measure the permeabilities of several samples or packs at a single time and results can be available in as little as thirty minutes in some cases.

Versaperm's new and extended sensor range can be used to measure vapour permeability with any usable gas, vapour material or package.

As well as the new system, the company offers both a laboratory-based permeability testing service and a consultancy.
